This is Mrs Genevieve (Peggy) Jeffs. Being blessed, Mrs Jeffs is motivated to serve the vulnerable in our community, to give the vulnerable a better life.

She joined the International Red Cross Movement in 2003 as the Seven Fundamental Principles of the Movement, namely humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality resonate strongly with her.

Mrs Jeffs fundraised in London as a Committee member of the International Red Cross Movement from 2003 to 2006. Upon her return to Singapore, she was invited to helm Singapore Red Cross’ Benefit Gala in 2008. Mrs Jeffs has not turned back since. A passionate advocate of the Movement, she helmed the Organising Committees for the Benefit Galas in 2008, 2011, and 2014, and the International Bazaars in 2009, 2012, 2015, 2017 and a Fashion for Humanity in 2013 to fundraise for the Singapore Red Cross.

and as a Deputy Secretary General for Singapore Red Cross.

In our line of work, we meet many caregivers who touch us with their positivity and strength as they navigate through challenging circumstances.

This Mothers’ Day, meet Mdm Nuraini, a mother of four, who devotes her life tending to the every need of her three special-needs children. Her eldest son Ahmad Fahmi spends his days at Red Cross Home for the Disabled, receiving quality care and therapy.

“Since he joined day care at RCHD, he is less withdrawn and no longer afraid of having people around him. RCHD staff are very responsive and constantly updates us on his well-being,” she says. We are glad to be able to make life better… And it is with our donors’ support that we continue to do that - everyday.

A mother’s love is truly selfless, and we are honoured to experience the love and warmth in Mdm Nuraini’s home. Happy Mothers’ Day
to all mothers - thank you for being protectors, teachers, best friends and number one fans. You deserve the world!

Last December, while many were away on holidays enjoying themselves, nine of our very own Red Cross Youth Volunteer Instructors (VI) embarked on a learning journey cum overseas humanitarian project to GK Lil Baguio, Davao, The Philippines. The shelter comprises 132 houses, of which 50 were contributed by Singapore Red Cross. Throughout the 8-days trip, our VIs were exposed to many different experiences - from home stays at the villagers' houses and door-to-door Christmas caroling, to conducting basic first aid training for housewives and teaching children about hygiene.

The Singapore Red Cross runs FoodAid, a programme which provides monthly rations of nutritious food to the working poor, skipped-generation, and single-parent families. Besides putting food on the table, its volunteer befrienders also offer a listening ear, a helping hand and practical advice to families in need.

To remind fortunate Singaporeans how precious food is and discourage wastage, we worked with MullenLowe Group to create a campaign based around Singapore’s staple food: Rice.

The campaign was called Every Grain Counts. To show how even a single grain of rice has value, meals were created around a single grain of rice. We partnered with popular restaurant chains including Boon Tong Kee, Sushi Express, Kith and Beng Hiang Family restaurant and served these meals across the country.

The mini-meals based on Singaporeans favourite dishes were a simple gesture that shows that every single grain of rice counts, and so does every single cent of donation.

Every Grain Counts helped fill donation boxes and empty stomachs throughout Singapore.

Once a month, volunteer befrienders bring nutritious food to skipped-generation families, single-parent families and the working poor.

At Singapore Red Cross, our International Services team supports communities in Asia to recover from natural disasters and build resilience during peacetime. This is Mr David Yeo. He was one of the first Red Cross volunteers to arrive at the scene following the Hotel New World collapse on 15 March 1986. The scene was bloody and chilling. There were blood stains all around. People buried beneath the debris were crying for help.

He rallied passersby to help by forming a human chain to bring out the survivors to a safe place. Having handled different situations at Red Cross, he was calm and composed and people turned to him for advice on what to do.

Coming from the Red Cross, his goal was to save as many people as he could. He listened for the cries beneath the debris and kept on the lookout for debris that moved as there could have been people beneath. He manually removed the debris with his bare hands. He continued digging despite the wounds and blisters on his hands. He managed to save two people, one of whom had a head injury but was still breathing. Exhausted, he left the rest of the rescue work to the police men and Civil Defence Force.


This is Ms Pat Jeanisa Ng. She was one of the volunteers who provided psychosocial support following the collapse of Hotel New World.

Besides offering refreshments and beverage to the relatives of victims at a vegetarian restaurant, she also offered a listening ear to family members at the mortuary as she was conversant in the dialects.

There she met a middle-aged Hakka woman who was a widow. She went through a lot to bring up her son after her husband died years ago. Her son recently graduated and was working at a bank. She was hoping to go into retirement since her son is working. Find out more about what happened to her son in the video.
